Captain arrested after Cancun tourist boat sinks, killing four onboard, including a child: Eight pas

At least four people drowned and eight others were rescued after the speedboat they were traveling on sank between Isla Mujeres and Cancún on Monday night. 

The captain of the boat has been placed under arrest, and seven people remain missing as of Tuesday. 

The victims, all Mexican nationals, were being transported from Isla Mujeres to Cancún when the 26–foot tour vessel over, known as the Goddess of the Sea,” capsized. 

A 64-year-old man, two women, aged 65 and between 40 and 45, and a 10-year-old have been confirmed dead. 

The survivors were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Quintana Roo state civil protection agency had issued a warning earlier in the day of strong wind currents in the sea and advised boat operators to take extra caution.

Quintana Roo Attorney General Raciel López told reporters that a search and rescue mission was underway for seven people who were reported missing. 

The captain of the vessel, a 38-year-old man identified as Ramón, was arrested.

He told investigators that they were headed to Port Juárez in Cancún when five people were knocked into the sea by a wave.

Ramón said that he only managed to help one person, who was seriously injured, back on the boat before it started to take on water.

Boat operators in the area received a call from one of the survivors and raced to the scene to help with the rescue. 

The captain could face four counts of homicide if charged. 

The deadly boating incident is the second in the region in over a month.

A vessel captain and a sailor drowned on December 10 after their boat was flipped over by a strong wind current in Cozumel.

The navy rescued nine tourists while two others swam safely to shore.

In a separate incident that day, the navy rescued 13 people after their boat took on water and started to sink.
